    Rosebud

    Jerry's Guitars

    Rosebud
In 1990 Garcia introduced the 3rd Doug Irwin guitar "Rosebud", named for the inlaid dancing skeleton on the ebony cover plate. With MIDI controls built in, it is almost a twin of Tiger, but two pounds lighter at 11 1/2 pounds. (While the shape is identical to Tigers, the body inlay, tone and volume control positions are different.) Though he continued to use Tiger with Garcia Band for about a year, Rosebud became Jerry's full time guitar.

    Lightning Bolt

    Lightning Bolt

    Jerry's Guitars

    Lightning Bolt
Jerry Garcia received Lightning Bolt as a gift from self-taught luthier Stephen Cripe . It became his primary instrument for the last two years of his life. Cripe emulated the body style of Doug Irwin's Tiger, utilizing only freeze-frames from the Grateful Dead video So Far, studying Tiger as it appeared in that 1985 footage. The end result was Lightning Bolt, so named because of the motif on the battery cover on the guitar. Lightning Bolt is made of a black walnut core and East Indian rosewood top and back, with rock maple for contrast. The neck is also made of the same rosewood and maple. The lightning bolt itself is mother of pearl surrounded by padauk, tinted maple and rosewood. Lightning Bolt weighs 10.6 pounds and has a 25 1/2" scale from nut to bridge. It measures 40 1/8" from top to bottom.

Four of Garcia's guitars are exhibited at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio, including Cripe's Lightning Bolt and Top Hat.

    Top Hat

    Jerry's Guitars

    Cripe Top Hat
Satisfied with Lightning Bolt, Jerry Garcia commissioned a back up guitar from Cripe - Top Hat. While he never played it on stage, Garcia reportedly was pleased with it and played it at home. Cripe wrote, "the Top Hat motif is fashioned of wart hog tusk and serves as a cover plate for the Roland GK-2 synth power supply". Top Hat has a walnut core with cocobolo top and back, laminated cocobolo, maple and rosewood neck, laminated headstock, 24 fret cocobolo fretboard with recycled ivory inlays, black Schaller hardware. Top Hat weighs 10.4 pounds and has a 25 3/4" scale. It measures 40 1/4" from top to bottom.
